Some of the greatest lessons in martial arts come from the matches you don’t win.

This was one of those moments.

I had the opportunity to compete against an outstanding martial artist from Argentina at the WTSDA World Championships. He went on to win first place in our division, and while my tournament ended on this match, I walked away with something much more valuable than another medal.

Competing against talented practitioners from around the world reminds me how much there is still to learn. Every opponent brings a different style, a different perspective, and another opportunity to improve.

One of the things I love most about Tang Soo Do is that losing isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of the journey toward it.

I’ll go home, study the match, improve, and come back better.

Most importantly, I’ll bring those lessons back to my students. Every experience I have—whether it’s a victory or a setback—helps me become a better instructor. My hope is that by sharing both my successes and my failures, my students can grow even faster than I did.

One of my favorite moments from the World Championships happened before anyone even stepped onto the floor to compete.

Standing in this ring were martial artists from different corners of the United States and from countries including Argentina, Denmark, Mexico, Great Britain, and South Africa. Despite our different backgrounds, languages, and life experiences, we all stepped into the same ring because of our shared passion for Tang Soo Do.

This year has been especially meaningful for me. It’s my first World Championships competing as a Sam Dan, my first in the Senior division, and my first time returning to Worlds since all of my knee surgeries. Stepping back onto the floor at this level is something I don’t take for granted.

As we waited to compete, everyone was understandably a little nervous. I suggested we take a group photo before we began. It was a simple idea, but it broke the ice. Once the competition started, we were no longer just standing beside strangers—we were cheering each other on, congratulating one another after each event, and sharing an experience that none of us will forget.

Moments like this remind me that the World Championships are about much more than competition. They’re about learning, friendship, and being part of a worldwide Tang Soo Do family.

As an instructor, that’s what excites me the most.

Every seminar I attend, every conversation I have, and every experience I gain becomes something I can bring back to my students at Martial Arts Revelation. My hope is that, years from now, many of them will have the opportunity to stand in a ring just like this—meeting lifelong friends from around the world, representing their school with pride, and creating memories they’ll carry with them for the rest of their lives.

That’s one of the greatest privileges of being an instructor. The experiences we have don’t end with us—they become part of the journey for the next generation.

Just a group of Region 1 black belts from different schools getting ready for another WTSDA World Championship.

Some of my favorite memories in martial arts weren’t on the competition floor. They were the road trips, the conversations between events, the early mornings, the late nights, and the friendships built through shared challenges.

We came from different instructors, different schools, and different backgrounds, but when it was time to represent Region 1, we were one team.

Looking back, I’m grateful for every tournament, every match, and every mile traveled with these gentlemen. The trophies eventually collect dust, but the friendships and memories stay with you.

This July, the WTSDA World Championships return to Chicago. Since Worlds only happens every other year, it’s always a special event for our association. Seeing this photo reminds me how fortunate I’ve been to share that experience with so many incredible martial artists over the years.

Every belt has a story.

I still remember students counting down the days until their next test, and sometimes there was one belt they wanted more than all the others. For this young martial artist, it was the pink belt. The smile says it all.

Belts are great milestones, but what I love most is what they represent: the hard work, perseverance, courage, and growth that happen between tests.

So now I'm curious...

Looking back at some old demo team memories today.

I always loved performing demos with Brandon Rodenburger. He is one of the most naturally talented athletes I've ever had the privilege of training with. Fast, creative, fearless, and always willing to put in the work necessary to make an idea come to life.

Over the years, we spent countless hours brainstorming, rehearsing, and refining demonstrations together. Some worked better than others, but a few of them became performances I'm still incredibly proud of today.

What people see during a demo is usually just a few minutes of excitement.

What they don't see are the hours of practice, the mistakes, the bruises, the problem-solving, and the trust that make those moments possible.

Martial arts has introduced me to many amazing people over the years, and Brandon is certainly one of them.

Grateful for the memories, the friendship, and all the opportunities we had to share Tang Soo Do with our community.

This photo was taken years ago when I was teaching classes out of Anytime Fitness in Larkfield. Standing in front of me is a student who came to train with me after my instructor, Master DeBaca, closed his school, Fitness Fanatics.

At the time, I had no idea where the path would lead. I just knew I loved Tang Soo Do and wanted to share it with others.

What stands out to me now isn't the location, the uniforms, or even how much we've all changed. It's the responsibility that comes with teaching. Every student who walks through the door places a certain amount of trust in their instructor. They trust you to guide them, challenge them, encourage them, and help them become a little better than they were yesterday.

Many years later, that responsibility is something I still think about every day.

Martial Arts Revelation may look different than those early days, but the mission remains the same: helping students build confidence, character, discipline, and leadership through traditional Tang Soo Do training.

Sometimes it's good to look back and appreciate how far the journey has come.

Completely unexpected. Completely humbling.

At the WTSDA Region 1 Championship, I was honored to be named Region 1 Instructor of the Year for 2026.

To say I was surprised would be an understatement.

When I look around our Association, I see instructors, mentors, and leaders who have dedicated years—many of them decades—to serving their students and preserving the values of Tang Soo Do. To be recognized among them is an honor I don’t take lightly.

The truth is, awards like this don’t make me feel accomplished as much as they make me feel grateful.

Grateful for the instructors who continue to challenge, guide, and invest in me.

Grateful for the students who trust me to be part of their martial arts journey.

Grateful for the parents who support their children and make our school community so special.

And grateful for the opportunity to do something I genuinely love every day.

One of the lessons Tang Soo Do has taught me is that growth never ends. There is always another lesson to learn, another skill to refine, and another way to serve others more effectively.

While I am deeply honored by this recognition, I know there is still much to learn and much work left to do.

One of the things I love most about teaching young students is watching their confidence grow. What starts as nervousness and uncertainty slowly transforms into focus, discipline, and self-belief.

Every stripe earned, every technique learned, and every challenge overcome helps build a foundation that extends far beyond the training floor.

These students worked hard, listened well, and demonstrated the courage to step up and test their skills.

I’m incredibly proud of each of them and excited to watch them continue their Tang Soo Do journey.

It’s amazing how quickly time passes.

I came across this photo from my first World Tang Soo Do Association World Championship after opening my own school.

Back then, the name on my uniform was Anytime Martial Arts. I was still figuring things out as a school owner, instructor, competitor, and leader. What I did know was that I loved Tang Soo Do, believed in my students, and wanted to build something meaningful.

A lot has changed since then.

The school has evolved into Martial Arts Revelation. Students have come and gone. New friendships have been formed. Mentors have guided me. Challenges have shaped me.

But one thing hasn’t changed:

The excitement of walking onto the floor at World Championships.

Every two years, practitioners from around the world gather to compete, learn, reconnect, and celebrate our shared Tang Soo Do journey. It’s one of the most inspiring experiences our Association offers.

And now, it’s almost here again.

World Championships return this July in Chicago, and I can’t wait.

Looking back reminds me how far we’ve come.

Looking forward reminds me how much there is still to learn.

Watching Angelo step onto the floor and compete at the WTSDA Region 1 Championship was one of my favorite moments of the weekend.

Competition has a way of testing more than technique. It tests focus, courage, preparation, and the ability to perform when the pressure is on.

Angelo trained hard for this opportunity. He pushed through the nerves, trusted his training, and stepped outside his comfort zone. That's what makes me proud.

The second-place medal is well deserved, but what I admire most is the growth that happened long before he ever stepped onto the ring.

We had the honor of learning Sang Gu Kwon, a rare and lesser-known form that carries with it generations of knowledge and intention. Moments like this remind me that martial arts isn’t just about movement—it’s about preserving and passing on something meaningful.

Standing alongside Master DeBaca, Master Duffield, seminar instructor Master Ramirez, and our host Master Ohlson (Paresh Martial Arts) and Mr. Cooley (Good Wolf Studio), I was struck by the depth of our shared lineage. Different generations, one continuous thread.

What stayed with me most, though, was watching Ms. Sienna—her discipline, focus, and intent truly set the tone for the entire day. A powerful reminder of what indomitable spirit looks like in action.

We all inherit something in this journey. The question is—how will you carry it forward?
